In 1483 Richard III issued a £40 warrant for a chapel to be built over the graves of the dead at Towton The chapel is mentioned in his order for the re-burial of bones. The alleged site of the chantry chapel is next to Towton Hall. Several surveys were carried out to locate evidence of this chapel.
An excavation in 1999 in the area of Chapel Hill found no evidence of a chapel. However, a little to the east … we have something of interest.
During recent building surveys and trial excavations, both within and around Towton Hall, further evidence has been recovered which strengthens the claim that this was the former site of Richard III’s Chapel. Fragments of carved medieval building material from windows and doorways, and fine-tooled stonework have been excavated at the hall. It is likely that these come from the original chapel.
