Landmarks : Conclusions

“Lord Dacre’s Cross” and the “Leper Pot” Boundary stones
The three “Tumuli” near Low Lead, Saxton Probably wrong period
The site formerly known as “The Graves” Pre-historic enclosure
The “Site of Tumuli” near “Bloody Meadow” No evidence of mounds or pits – probably erroneous location
Richard III’s Chapel on “Chapel Hill” Not outside garden enclosure, although there is possible evidence nearer to the hall
“Lord Dacre’s Tomb” Tangible evidence
“Lord Dacre’s Bur Tree” Probable site of former grave marker

Little of the existing evidence of the Battle of Towton stands up to close scrutiny except for what initially appears to be the most insignificant of them, the site of “Lord Dacre’s Bur Tree”.

It is therefore important to verify what evidence actually exists for the conflict in question before interpretations can be made about the details or location.
